Oral Care: Let’s Talk About Dental Braces

Keeping your teeth clean by brushing is a good oral hygiene practice. However, having dental braces is another story.

Dental braces are used to correct crooked teeth, crowding, and jaw discrepancies. The goal is to straighten and align teeth to produce a normal bite and attractive smile. Depending on the severity of the case, dental braces can be worn for at least two years for better dental function.

Taking care of your braces involves proper hygiene and food discipline. Food particles may be entrapped in between braces and become an ideal breeding ground for bacteria to stay in. This in turn can accumulate plaque build-up and cause decay if not well-taken care of.

Keep your teeth and braces in tip-top shape by doing these oral care practices.

BRUSHING

With or without braces, it is vital to brush your teeth at least twice a day, but when undergoing orthodontic treatment such as having dental braces, the brushing frequency is twice the amount needed in normal times. Brushing your teeth often helps remove food debris and bacteria that can cause serious oral health problems. It is recommended to brush your teeth post-meal and this includes snacks. Experts recommend that each brushing session should last for at least 5 minutes.

FLOSSING AND MOUTHWASH

Flossing is recommended to remove food particles trapped in between teeth and braces which a regular toothbrush cannot reach. Your dentist can recommend the type of floss that suits your needs. Make an effort to floss after every meal and before going to bed at night. Also, rinsing with mouthwash helps strengthen teeth enamel and prevents tooth decay.

INTERPROXIMAL BRUSH

This small-bristled brush comes in handy as it helps remove food debris stuck in your braces as well as those in-between brackets and under metal wires. The interproximal brush comes in different widths and sizes. This type of brush is also useful in cleaning spaces in between teeth and reduces the risk of periodontitis and gum diseases.

WATCH WHAT YOU EAT

As mentioned, wearing braces come with a responsibility to avoid certain foods that can lead to their breakage. Common food that should be avoided includes the following:

  • Foods that require an effort to bite such as apples, bagels, and corn on the cob.
  • Sticky foods such as chewing gums, caramel, or any type of candies that stick to the tooth surface.
  • Popcorns, nuts, and ice should also be avoided as they can break the braces.
  • Cut down on sugary drinks and processed foods as they can cause staining, demineralization, and tooth decay.
